Wellwood International Becomes An IB World School

Wellwood International authorized as first International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme in BCPS

The International Baccalaureate Organization (IB) has authorized Wellwood International School as an IB World School for the Primary Years Programme (PYP). Wellwood is the first Baltimore County Public School to earn this designation.

In a letter to the school, IB Director General Siva Kumari, wrote: “As an IB World School offering the PYP, you are part of a global community of schools committed to developing knowledgeable, caring young people who will be ready to negotiate their futures successfully and make contributions resulting in a more harmonious and peaceful world."

“Wellwood’s vision is ‘Empowering inquiring minds to change the world,’" said Wellwood Principal Jodi O’Neill. “By encouraging students to be thinkers and leaders, students find out they have a voice. We want our students to know that their voice is important, and they have the power to make the world a better place."

The journey to authorization began four years ago for Wellwood International, which was then a French immersion school. While working toward authorization, Wellwood became an international studies magnet school.

“If it wasn’t for the commitment of Wellwood’s teaching staff, we would not have achieved our goal of becoming an IB World School," O’Neill said. “Teachers collaborate while planning, and once a unit has been taught, they reflect on the lessons together to make them even stronger. Their dedication to our students and to the IB programme is inspiring."

The Primary Years Programme is taught in more than 109 countries and is based around six transdisciplinary themes: Who We Are, Where We Are in Place and Time, How We Express Ourselves, How We Organize Ourselves, How the World Works, and Sharing the Planet.
