·        The Giant Food A+ Bonus Bucks program has begun once again.  You can help earn money for Wellwood just by registering your card and then shopping at Giant.  To register for the A+ Bonus Bucks program go to www.giantfood.com/aplus and select Wellwood International School (school ID# 01307) as your school of choice.  Remember, you have to re-register your card every year, so even if you registered in the past you have to register again. Thanks for helping us earn money to help your children!

·        On Thursday, November 5th Wellwood will be holding a special event: a tree planting.  Wellwood has received 105 trees to plant on the school grounds.  These trees will make our school more beautiful, shade our un-airconditioned classrooms and provide a forested area for wildlife.  The trees will also absorb air and water pollution, making our world a better place.  We need volunteers to help at the tree planting.  Please complete and return the attached form or email Mrs. Watts for more information.

·        Harvest for the Hungry collection of non-perishables will continue until November 6th.  Please help us be kind and fill our grocery cart with canned goods and non-perishables to feed the hungry in Maryland.

·        Mark your calendars...

Just in time for the winter holidays – avoid baking desserts and snacks for holiday parties and support a good cause at the same time! The PTA’s fundraiser with Claire’s Gourmet begins November 4 with delivery of yummy snacks and desserts on December 15th. Check out Clairesgourmet.com if you want to see what is available and shop online, or browse a catalog and we will deliver to the school for easy pick-up. If you shop on-line, be sure to use Wellwood’s school code (1698) so the school can receive credit. If you also want a child to receive credit for the sale, please get that child’s participant code from them before shopping online.  Students who want to receive credit for online sales must register at Clairesgourmet.com to receive a participant code. The participant account set up can be found under the “Our Fundraisers” tab on the website.

Many thanks to our fabulous volunteers for committees and upcoming events!  Kamesha Milton, Lila Khodorkovsky, Lashon Moseley, Lisa Sennaar, Eve Greco, Karen Kuebler, Chris Strim, Karen Mendoza and Lisa Sifford will be helping to run the programs that make Wellwood a better place.

·        What's Going on Around the School...

The 4th grade will be going to Marshy Point in conjunction with the Eco-Scouts unit.  Ms. Watts and Ms. Nielsen will be going on November 4th and Mrs. King and M. Moen will go on November 13th.

This month the French club will be on Tuesday November 3nd (K, 1, 2) and Tuesday, November 17th (3, 4, 5). Unfortunately, there is not anymore space available in either of the two clubs.  MANY thanks to Karen Kuebler, Christine Strim and Lila Khodorkovsky, without their help and dedication, we wouldn't have any French club!

The 3rd graders are currently in the midst of their second theme in reading: Celebrating Traditions.  They will be learning all about how families and cultures keep and pass on traditions.  Be sure to talk with your 3rd grader about your important traditions.  In math news, the end of the 1st quarter has come and gone.  Congratulations to all of our fact stars!  The following students have meet the goal and become addition fact stars:

News from the guidance department:

I have enjoyed going into the classrooms of the 3rd graders during September and October.  We have had a great time learning about conflict resolution with our pal, Scruffy the Dog.  Thank you 3rd grade students—you were excellent listeners and now you are great problem solvers!  During the month of November I will be coming into the classrooms of the 4th graders.  Don’t worry 4th graders—you too will get to meet Scruffy and learn about the stop, think and pick a plan steps.  You will be specialists in how to solve problems and calm down when you’re in a heated situation!  I’m looking forward to meeting with my 4th graders in November!  -Ms. Benjamin

·        Special thanks to...

The Kindergarten teachers would like to thank the special parents that went with the classes to the zoo. We were so excited to have so many parents come up to school quickly to take the volunteer training. They helped make our trip safe and lots of fun. We hope that they will all join us in April for our wonderful trip to the B & O Railroad Museum.  We hope to see them all soon at upcoming school events.

Home School Connection

One of the most important things you can do to help your children become better readers is read with them!  Sitting together and sharing books is a great way to help children learn words, reading strategies, and just have fun.  Click below to learn some of the do's and don'ts of reading to your children.

The Do's and Don'ts of Reading Aloud

Remember to write down the minutes you read together on your child's Ben Carson form.  Think Big and keep reading!

On Thursday the 5th the students of Wellwood are going to be planting trees on our school grounds.  This is a great opportunity to learn about the plants that we depend on for beauty, food, fun and oxygen.  Check out the links on the Arbor Day Foundation's site.  You can read interesting facts about the life of trees, learn how to identify leaves and when you are tired, play concentration or do a jigsaw puzzle.
