Sight Words

In kindergarten it is very important that students learn to read sight words.  These words are common words that readers see all the time.  Use the activities and sight words below to practice and reinforce what is being learned at school.

Suggested activities:

  • Play Concentration!  Write each word on two index cards.  Lay the cards face down on the table.  Take turns flipping over two cards.  Read each card as it is turned over.  If the cards say the same word, the person gets to keep them.  If the cards do not say the same word, turn them back over.  Whoever has the most cards at the end of the game wins.

  • Show your child four sight word cards, then have her close her eyes as you take away one card.  Ask her which word was taken away.

  • As you read aloud with your child have him find the sight words in the book.

  • Using one of your child's books, find the sight words in it and write each of those words on a post it note.  Then stick all the post it notes in the back of the book.  Your child can then take each post it note, find the word in the book and put the post it by the word.  You can do this as you read aloud together, or your child can do it on her own.
