Keep checking the "What's New" page for fun French events at Wellwood! The program “Foreign Language in the Elementary School,” also known as FLES, is designed to expose young children to foreign language. Because their brains are still developing, children are able to learn language more quickly and easily than adults. Learning a second language helps children to become better listeners and to make connections with their native languages, heightening their skill in their native language. The FLES program began at Wellwood in the fall of 2003 with kindergarten, first and second grades. In March of 2004 the program was expanded to include third, fourth and fifth grades. All students in the comprehensive program now receive 60 minutes of French instruction every week. Classroom teachers support and reinforce instruction by including French commands, numbers and other vocabulary words throughout the day. Every year students review previous topics and are introduced to new vocabulary. Topics covered during each year of instruction are listed below.
