P.B.I.S.

Dear Wellwood Families,

Welcome back to another busy and exciting year at Wellwood International. This summer, revisions were made to better align our existing behavior plan with the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. This letter is to inform you of changes you can expect. As always, our number one priority is to ensure a safe and orderly learning environment for all students and appropriately and responsively address the needs of each student. We know that it is our job to address the whole child, academically, socially and emotionally. The provisions written in our new behavior plan strive to establish a culture and climate that will support the Wellwood mission.

Wellwood’s Mission Statement:

Wellwood International strives to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring students in an engaging, rigorous and multi-cultural environment to instill inter-cultural understanding and respect.

The following tenets outline our revised behavior plan with additional information and clarification.

1.  Behavior expectations are established school wide.

T Each morning, your child will have the opportunity to recite the Wellwood Principles as a part of our morning announcements. You child can begin practicing the Wellwood Pledge at home!

As a principled Wellwood learner, I do what is right by being safe, respectful, responsible and caring.

Additionally, we will continue to learn about and practice exhibiting the ten attributes of the IB Learner Profile. They are listed below.

- inquirers

- principled

- risk-taker

- reflective

- knowledgeable

- open-minded

- thinkers

- caring

- communicators

- balanced

2. Behavior expectations and systems are taught, modeled, practiced and retaught as needed.

At the beginning of the school year, teachers and staff will spend time modeling and practicing routines and expectations with all students. Essential agreements will be written collaboratively in each class to establish classroom expectations. These essential agreements will be revisited throughout the school year as needed.

3. Positive behavior is reinforced.

Positive behavior is reinforced in many ways. In addition to verbal praise, students can receive Positive Paws for demonstrating the Wellwood Principles. Positive Paws can be earned in denominations of 1, 3, 4, 5 and 10. Students will have the opportunity to exchange their Positive Paws at the Wildcat Store for rewards and special coupons.

Students will have the opportunity to be recognized as a part of the WILDCATtribute Pack for exhibiting the IB Learner Profile and as a part of the Principal’s Pride for demonstrating Wellwood Principles. We look forward to celebrating the positive choices the students at Wellwood will make this year!

4. Supportive relationships and communities are developed and maintained.

Students and teachers will develop relationships in community circles. Each morning classes gather in a community circle and this time is utilized to help students get to know one another, teach social expectations and solve problems. Families are encouraged to ask their child about topics discussed in community circles.

5. Students reflect on their own behavior and help problem solve.

All students will have the opportunity to reflect on their behavior each day. The last 10 minutes of the day are utilized in each classroom to reflect on the day. Students will complete a reflection form that will be brought home to be signed. If needed, your child’s teacher may write a note on the reflection form, so it is very important that it is seen and signed each night. Your child’s teacher will communicate where the reflection form can be found each night.

6. Families are regularly informed and welcomed as a part of their child’s social and emotional learning.

We are partners in your child’s education and success. Together, we will work to best meet the individual needs of your child. Please do not hesitate to reach out with questions so that we can proactively work to address any concerns.

7. Behavior that does not meet expectations is addressed in a timely, restorative and progressive manner.

If your child’s behavior does not meet expectations, he or she will receive multiple informal warnings that may include verbal and non-verbal redirection, error correction and reminders. If the behavior continues a formal warning may be given. A formal warning is an opportunity for the student to stop and reflect. This may include an opportunity to utilize the cool down space in the classroom, visit another classroom or complete a behavior reflection. It is important to note that a formal warning does not reflect behavior for the whole day. A formal warning provides an opportunity for a child to correct his or her behavior and get back on track. If needed, a child can receive an office referral which will be communicated with the family to identify strategies to restore behavior. The Student Support Team may be utilized to identify the best strategies to meet a child’s needs, if necessary. Parents are a vital part of the Student Support Team and are an integral part of the process. It is always our goal to teach and model appropriate behavior for students.
